Perfectionism Self-Help Study

We are currently seeking students at Utah State University and the University of Toledo Ohio who experience high levels of perfectionism. Perfectionism is both a trait and a behavior where people develop unrealistically high standards and attribute self-value to meeting these expectations. We are running a study on how to treat unhelpful perfectionism, or when these high standards get in the way of important life areas (e.g., school, work, relationships, etc.).

Please note that participation is completely up to you, and you can withdraw from the study at any time. You can receive up to $25 for completing all the surveys in the study. The total time commitment for the study is approximately 15 hours over 3 months and 2 weeks.

We are currently seeking students at Utah State University and the University of Toledo Ohio who experience high levels of perfectionism. Perfectionism is both a trait and a behavior where people develop unrealistically high standards and attribute self-value to meeting these expectations. We are running a study on how to treat unhelpful perfectionism, or when these high standards get in the way of important life areas (e.g., school, work, relationships, etc.).
Participation will involve:
- A brief phone interview assessing perfectionism
- Being randomly assigned to: (1) reading an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) based self-help book (140 pages), (2) reading a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based self-help book (149 pages), or (3) a waitlist control group.
- Completing 4 self-report questionnaires (baseline, mid-assessment, post-assessment, and 1 month follow-up).
In order to be eligible, you must:
- Be 18 years old or older
- Endorse high levels of perfectionism
- A current student at Utah State University or University of Toledo
- The ability to understand and read English
